Another Major Milestone for Utimaco: Achieving the Highest Security Standards with FIPS 140-3 Certification for Both General Purpose HSM and Payment HSM
Utimaco, one of the leading providers of Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) and enterprise Data Protection solutions, has further strengthened its position in cryptographic security with the official FIPS 140-3 Level 3 certification of its u.trust General Purpose HSM Se-Series (Link: https://csrc.nist.gov/projects/cryptographic-module-validation-program/certificate/5223).
Prior to this achievement, Atalla AT1000, Utimaco's flagship Payment HSM, had also received FIPS 140-3 certification from NIST. As a result, Utimaco has become the first and currently the only vendor to offer both General Purpose HSMs and Payment HSMs certified to the FIPS 140-3 Level 3 standard.
FIPS 140-3 is the latest cryptographic security standard issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). First introduced in 2019, it is set to replace FIPS 140-2 in the near future. This certification has become a critical consideration for organizations evaluating cryptographic security solutions, particularly those operating in highly regulated environments such as government agencies, financial institutions, healthcare organizations, and Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) sectors.
In addition to FIPS 140-3 Level 3 certification, the u.trust GP HSM Se-Series is currently undergoing certification for VS-NfD, Germany's official security standard for classified information. The product is expected to receive this additional certification later this year.
Key Features of the u.trust General Purpose HSM Se-Series
The u.trust General Purpose HSM Se-Series is Utimaco's flagship General Purpose HSM platform, specifically designed to support modern cryptographic security and key management requirements. Key features include:
• Containerized HSM technology supporting multi-tenancy with up to 31 containers
• Available in both LAN Appliance and PCIe Card form factors
• Support for Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC)
• In-field performance upgrades without hardware replacement
• Ideal for PKI, Code Signing, Blockchain, and 5G Security applications
In addition, the Se-Series can be upgraded to support FIPS 140-3 through a firmware update, eliminating the need for hardware replacement and helping organizations reduce both costs and downtime.
Atalla AT1000 and the New Standard for Payment HSMs
Atalla AT1000 is another flagship product in Utimaco's portfolio and was the first Payment HSM on the market to achieve FIPS 140-3 Level 3 certification.
The Atalla AT1000 is purpose-built for payment security applications, including:
• Card Payment Processing
• PIN Translation
• EMV Transactions
• Payment Key Management
It also supports internationally recognized payment security standards widely adopted across the financial services industry.
Today's organizations face increasing cybersecurity threats and more stringent compliance requirements than ever before. Selecting an HSM that meets internationally recognized security standards is therefore no longer optional, it is a critical component of a comprehensive security strategy.
By choosing Utimaco HSM solutions that are certified across both General Purpose and Payment HSM product lines under FIPS 140-3, organizations can strengthen their security posture, meet compliance requirements, prepare for the era of Post-Quantum Security, and support long-term Digital Transformation and Cloud Security initiatives.
